Shiraho Summer Event – Shishimai (Lion Dance), Ishigaki Island

The Shiraho Lion Preservation Society in Shiraho, Ishigaki Island, boasts a tradition dating back approximately 300 years. For three nights during Obon, the sounds of sanshin and taiko drums echo throughout the area. In Shiraho, there is a custom of swallowing a baby in the mouth of a lion dancer, praying for the prosperity of the family line and good health.
